The History of Our Church

"Come near to the holy men and women of the past and you will soon feel the heat of their desire after God."  – Pastor A.W. Tozer (1897-1963)

We have a Seminole First Baptist Church today because of the vision and dedication of some holy men and women of God.

Reverend Herbert Wright, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church of St. Petersburg (no longer in existence), began Seminole Baptist Mission in 1956. It was constituted as Seminole First Baptist Church on October 12th, 1969.

By 1961, a sanctuary (our current fellowship hall), and education building (our current preschool building) was built. The groundbreaking ceremony for the new sanctuary was held on May 7th, 1972 and was completed in 1974. A new education building was built in 1984. A special note burning ceremony was observed to celebrate paying off the building's mortgage.

Since its beginning, the church has been faithfully reaching out to Seminole with the gospel. 18 interim and full-time pastors have tended over God's sheep since its beginning. The church, then and now, has a heart for faithfully supporting mission work.

The buildings, places of worship are important, but it's the people that meet in those buildings that make up the true Church of Christ. And the faithful, sacrificial service of those people is how Christ has chosen to reach out to others who have yet to know Him and the abundant life He alone can give.

If you are a child of God through faith in Christ's sacrifice, please pray about how you might serve and become a part of the fruitful history of God's people.
